What can be done to pollution in our country?

A.Suggested questions:
1.What are the main courses of pollution?
2.How have we behaved towards the nature?
3.Do you think we are the only species that can choose either to look after our world or to destroy it?
4.What should be done to reduce or prevent it?

B.Suggested ideas:
1.The root causes of pollution:
a.Variety of chemical subtances:
- Over 80% of our population is farmers/peasants, petrochemicals used to make the soil rich, to kill insects that it plants.
- Vietnam is a developing country: a lot of factories being set up; many kinds of chemical waste disposed from them.
- Various kinds of biological weapons used in the wars such as H bombs, atomic bombs and other poisonous chemicals to kill people, to ruin plants and trees, to damage farm land.
- And all the chemicals still remain active, they go into rivers, lakes, the sea, and kill the fish there, go into the air. Then winds carry them throughout our country, badly affect us and our children, even the future generation.
b.Oxygen and carbon dioxide are not on balance in the air (a shortage of oxygen and an increase of carbon dioxide), making the earth warmer and warmer.
- The tropical rain forests are being destroyed (when trees are gone, the land becomes desert) because:
+ Poor farmers cut down trees for firewood or to make grassland for their cattle,
+ Individual benefits: trees are cut down to sell for building and building wood is worth a big fortune.
+ Forest fires: taking place due to the dry climate or men’s mistakes.
- Too much coal, gas, oil are endlessly being burned to run/operate engines because of too much traffic, too many factories- produce too much smoke, create large amounts of carbon dioxide, then send many tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and heat the earth. That’s the root cause of the bad earth climate.
c. Our attitude towards nature:
- Many of us are not concious of keeping the environment clean or protecting it. The people in the slums (on both sides of the rivers) near the rivers empty their dustbins or throw their domestic/household waste into the rivers.
d. Disasters:
- Natural disasters: floods, storms make our environment polluted. Many people and animals are killed in a flood or storm. Dead bodies are attacked by bacterium, polluting the environment (the source of drinking water), causing a lot of diseases.
- Man-caused disasters: thousands of tons oil emtying into the sea because of the oil tank collisions threaten the ocean environment.
2. Things we have to do to protect the environment:
a. Chemical uses:
- Instruct farmers how to use some particular chemicals effectively and in a safe way.
- Strict regulations should be applied to factories: penalties and sentences have to imposed on law-breakers.
- Stimulate and encourage scientists to find the ways preventing or minimizing active chemicals in the air.
b. Natural disasters:
- Deforestation must be banned.
- Longer terms of imprisonment must be imposed corrupted foresters/ smugglers,
- Rewards should be offered for those who are brave to protect the forest.
c. Human’s attitude towards nature:
- Great attention should be paid to poor farmers: improve their standard of living and knowledge, eradicate illiteracy.
- An environment protection campaign should be launched throughout the country to make people fully aware of the importance of the environment.
C. How to begin the topic:
1. “We should behave to the world as we wish the world to behave towards us”, Aristotle once said. It means that in those days, great awareness was made of the importance of the environment. It is even more polluted than ever nowadays. It is time to do something for environmental protection.
2. Pollution is the major difficulty faced by developing countries. It is not exception to our country. Anyone would say our country is seriously polluted. As a citizen, I have thought about what can be done to limit the environmental pollution.
